Merchant collaborates with British composer Gavin Bryars to put sonnets to music for The Royal Shakespeare Company’s festival

February 28, 2007

Merchant was invited to participate in “The Sonnet Project” with the UK’s Opera North as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s ambitious “Complete Works Festival”. The RSC invited companies from across Britain and the world to join them in presenting all of Shakespeare’s plays, sonnets, and poems in a year long celebration from April 2006 to April 2007.

Natalie’s collaboration with British composer Gavin Bryars premiered in Stratford-upon-Avon at The Courtyard Theatre on February 24 & 25 in 2007 as part of The Complete Works festival. Merchant and several other pop music artists (Liz Fraser, Anthony Hegarty, Gavin Friday and violinist Alexander Balanescu) all contributed music inspired by Shakespeare’s sonnets. Gavin Bryars elaborated upon those songs writing arrangements for an eight-piece chamber orchestra from Opera North directed by James Holmes with performances by singers John Potter (tenor) and Anna Maria Friman (soprano).
