826 Valencia Workshop

Natalie conducts a master class for high school writers.

August 18, 2010

While continuing her summer tour in California last week Natalie took some time off from performing to spend an afternoon conducting a workshop in San Francisco with a group of lucky teenagers.

The non-profit writing center for students, 826 Valencia, was founded by writer Dave Eggers in 2002. The program is dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their writing skills, and to helping teachers get their students excited about writing.

Accompanied by guitarists Gabriel Gordon and Erik Della Penna Natalie sang songs from her most recent album Leave Your Sleep. Merchant discussed the poetry behind the lyrics to her songs as well as encouraging the students to read and discuss their own writing.

You can read more about the event in a recent San Francisco Chronicle article.
